What is the Family Fund?
Do you or someone you know need money to help cover unfunded services? The Arc Central Chesapeake Region’s Family Fund provides grants to families with children with disabilities under the age of 21 who request assistance with covering the costs of therapies, equipment, respite care, camps, and more.
“It’s less of a financial stress for me, to know that I can reach out and get help. I do the best that I can. I keep a roof over my daughter’s head. I am insanely frugal so that I can support her. But to know that there is funding for things that Medicaid doesn’t cover, for things that make such a difference in my daughter’s life, it’s just a huge burden off my shoulders. As a single mother, single resource household – you have no idea how much of a difference this makes to our family.” – Holly
Meet Holly and Angel.
Angel is a sweet seven-year-old little girl. She cannot walk. She cannot talk. She wasn’t able to engage with the world around her, until now.
Her mother, Holly, was able to apply for a grant from The Arc’s Family Fund to help pay for a universal stand for Angel’s eye-gaze technology. This tablet-like device tracks eye movement and empowers Angel to communicate with the world around her. Medicaid would only fund for a stand for Angel’s wheelchair. But Angel isn’t always in her wheelchair – she’s sometimes on the ground, or a hospital bed, or in her own bed. Then the technology doesn’t do her any good – she loses her voice.
Thanks to a grant from the Family Fund, Holly was able to get a universal stand so that Angel can have access to her eye-gaze technology – and her voice – at all times. Without the grant from the Family Fund, the $1,100 stand would have been completely out of reach.
