Bowen Foundation

The Bowen Foundation for Autism is a nonprofit organization that seeks to improve the lives of children with autism in Maryland. Our goal is pretty simple: we award grants to local families who are struggling to pay for needed services to benefit children with autism. Since 2007, the Bowen Foundation for Autism has raised more than $300,000 to help local families pay for every day expenses: doctors’ appointments, behavioral therapies, safety equipment, learning devices and other services. Insurance (for those who even have it) covers very little of many treatments and our goal is to help where we can and hopefully provide a little relief, and a little hope.

The foundation runs a grant program in partnership with The Arc of the Central Chesapeake to reach families predominately in Anne Arundel County who need a little help. Some of these families have more than one child affected by this condition and we work to stretch our dollars to impact as many lives as possible.

Why the Foundation was started

The Bowen Foundation for Autism was founded because America’s autism epidemic has reached staggering proportions and we felt that we could do something to help right here in our own community. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, autism is the fastest growing developmental disability in the United States, now affecting 1 in 68 births. Every one of us knows someone who is affected by this overwhelming disease. There is no cure; but there are many therapies and behavioral interventions designed to remedy symptoms and bring about substantial improvement for children with autism.

So, with this in mind, the Bowen Foundation was created. As a family, we are lucky enough to have the resources to take care of Bowen and as we’ve navigated this world of autism, we have learned that many, many families simply cannot afford the services that are so vital to improving the lives of children with autism. As a result, we started this foundation in 2007 with a group of individuals who wanted to make a difference. Our goal was simple: to provide funding for children with autism right here in Maryland to receive the treatments they need. Not just medical treatments that are so beneficial, but also educational, diet and behavioral offerings that have helped make a difference in Bowen and many others.
