Chesapeake Neighbors
Opening Doors - A Home of Your Own Project enables individuals with cognitive and developmental disabilities to rent or own homes, ultimately achieving independent living in the community of their choice. Our primary goal is the availability of statewide opportunities for "self-controlled and self-determined housing."
The Arc is working with housing specialists in the County to find homes, assist in securing funding and provide homeownership training.
Megan, 38, has been living in her own home for three years now. She says:
“I love it. It makes me feel independent and like I am just like everyone else. I am proud it is all mine! Also, I can hang a birdfeeder outside my window. I love watching the birds. I also like hanging out with my neighbors and watching the kids play ball in the street.”
